Thanks to all who have continued to read.

The changes to Feedburner concern me. And this no more free photos thing has me flummoxed. i do not do online payments, but i will continue to need my images. This is my primary way of sharing my work, not to mention that some posts wouldn't work without the illustrations.

Maybe that needs to change.

i'm amused by the way the contributors here are listed alphabetically. Either Mark or Boom are welcome to contribute as they wish, but they don't. Mark would handle any payments, and both are my technical consultants.

At the moment, i'm looking into other blogging platforms. Maybe i'll need to expand my online presence.

Right now, i don't see that what i've already published will need to go away, but i may need another platform if i'm to continue. Will keep you posted, and any comments or suggestions on this would be welcome!

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-88853566000196332582021-01-28T21:57:00.003-05:002023-08-19T15:33:45.325-04:00Ghostly Characters: a short comparison of some of Agatha Christie's people, with comment on Sophie Hannah's Poirot

When i bought my latest Christie book at the bookstore, the bookseller was eager

to tell this Agatha Christie fan about Sophie Hannah's books.

He'd urged them on me before. And i am a fan - sort of. Hannah writes really good mysteries, but somehow i've always felt her Poirot was a ghost character, a stick figure filling in for the real guy.

i still want to read her Poirot stories though. And that leads me to my comment about Death in the Clouds.

i'd read this one before, decades ago, so it read like a new book. And i love the story with its double twist ending.

But this time, i found a character who reminded me of Hannah's Poirot. No, not Poirot himself, but the heroine.

Jane Grey feels like a "shadow character." She is the the sweet ingenue, the heroine for whom the young men fall, but she doesn't seem very defined. She's a hairdresser who would love to have adventures.

And she's enjoyable in the context of the story, though forgettable after it's over.

In contrast,
consider:.

Anne Beddingfeld (The Man in the Brown Suit) is her father's
household manager who wants to have adventure. She is feisty
and saucy. Determined to solve the mystery, she follows the clues to Africa, taking a surfbreak between kidnappings.

Victoria Jones (They Came to Baghdad) is a (bad) secretary
who wants to have adventure. Maybe someone nicknamed "Little
India Rubber Face" has a character that came with the name, Her only goal is to reunite with the young man she met once at the park. Determined to join her young man, she
embarks on her adventure, not knowing how she'll get there.

Katherine Grey (The Blue Train) is is the most conventional of these young women. A companion who wants to
have adventure, she is thoughtful and self-contained, but the thoughts she has are many and carefully-considered.

Somehow these characters are more than young women who successfully burst out of their humdrum existence.

i don't know how to define this further. A feeling thing, from forty years reading and rereading the author. Perhaps i'm imagining the differences.

Or perhaps the bookseller, fan though he is, hasn't yet sufficiently immersed himself in the characters pick up the subtle nuance.

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-21234101345347250662021-01-24T16:54:00.000-05:002021-01-24T16:54:02.410-05:00Agatha Christie's Poirot and the novel/movie Third Girl
It's no secret that Agatha Christie did not like her popular Poirot character. She even (spoiler!) killed him off in a late 1940s novel.

And then kept writing about him. After all, her public loved, and still loves, him. (And publishers love following proven success with more of the same thing.)

But this created a problem. Her 1940s novels were definitely 1940s novel. When i first read (novel referred to above), i felt a dreamike disconnectedness. Poirot was still active in the 1960s and early 1970s; a novel written in the 1940s doesn't give the same feel. Christie also wrote a Miss Marple novel at the same time, but, since she did not kill the character, it's easy to disregard its tagline, Miss Marple's Last Case.

Third Girl is definitely a 1960s novel. The girls wore their hair long, loose, and straight, or maybe bouffant; drug culture and nonrealistic art were strong background elements. i'm unfmailiar with the "stepped from a VanDyck painting" fashion of the young men in the story, but, ok, that's undoubtedly a part of what Christie was seeing in the 1960s.

Third Girl is billed as Agatha Christie’s foray into the swinging sixties. And it is certainly a portrayal
of the 1960s, as seen by an older generation who cannot understand why
these young people won’t take a bath and get the hair out of their eyes.
Taken purely as a mystery novel, however, Third Girl is
enormously satisfying, a twisty puzzler that, for all its surface
modernity, proves that nothing is more timeless than murder. from https://deadyesterday.wordpress.com/2020/03/22/third-girl-1966-by-agatha-christie/

In the Suchet film, numerous changes are made to the story. For a list, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Girl#Adaptations_for_television
The film is gorgeous. i actually like a few of the changes , such as a
murder victim in the novel is NOT murdered. There also seems to be better
closure with the criminals's story. The movie, as is the entire series, is well done.

However, the filmmakers
moved the setting back to the 1930s. In itself, that solves the problem presented by that novel from the late 40s, the one that killed off the character.

But overall, the timeshift isn't a problem. The side effect of Norma's changed hairstyle, a
chic period pouf instead of stringy unwashed hair, is disconcerting. And while Miss Lemon and Dr. Stillingfleet added greatly to the novel, the time change may not have made their absence necessary. i missed especially the fiery doctor, who appears all too seldom..

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-43618604397582628592021-01-20T20:59:00.000-05:002021-01-20T20:59:50.917-05:00On Wednesday, Inaugeration Day

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-47507947171777758862020-12-24T11:26:00.004-05:002020-12-24T11:26:51.810-05:00December 24, 2020
Merry Christmas to everyone. Hopefully MyGuy and i can prep ourselves mentally to put up our living room tree - tt means so much to Max, but the most initiative he'll take in getting it up is to wish us "Merry Christmas" out of the blue.

However, he has two small trees up in his room. One is a new, 4' prelit one, which he is enjoying.

It seems in a sense especially important to keep this tradition in this year of universally lowered expectations.

The IRCA has prepared their usual article

of tips to help us help our children on the spectrum cope with the upcoming holidays. https://www.iidc.indiana.edu/irca/articles/making-the-most-of-the-holidays-for-your-family-and-your-son-daughter.html

Here's a short quote listing some items to be sure to mention:

Where and How Christmas Dinner Will Occur

Who Will Be Present at Christmas this Year

How Family Will Meet Virtually This Year

Where the Family May or May Not Be Going This Year: In other words, what family traditions cannot happen.

If Others Come Over, Rules about Wearing Masks, and Other Safety Precautions.

At the end of the article are links to specific tips, including social stories about home and visiting, and a fill=in calendar.

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-32929914048345608292020-12-09T00:30:00.001-05:002020-12-09T00:30:00.811-05:00Words on Wednesday: More on the Lord Peter books
This post contains an annotated list of the Lord Peter novels.

But first, a question for you:

How do the Lord Peter novels and stories resemble the Big Bang Theory TV show?

It's in the fan responses to the changes.

i think there's a corresponding change in fan attitudes based on with or without the romantic interests.

People form and reform pairs. They grow older.

They continue to be, yet are not, the same person.

In the same way Boom and i differ on the best years of the TV show (he likes the young single nerds, i like the more or less settled couples approaching middle age), Wimsey fans are sharply divided on the question of, Is he better / more fun with or without Harriet?

His character does change slightly throughout the series. This should only be expected.

....just a little elfin charm goes a long way with me, especially when it is
displayed by a presumably intelligent fully grown male well over the age
of fifteen, which I would consider the extreme limit of archness.
Depending on the particular novel or story, I find him by turns amusing,
fatuous, tedious, or merely insufferable. In general I prefer early
Wimsey to late, both on the grounds of his fallen archness and because
he at least occasionally becomes an object of fun and satire in his
early exploits. In the later ones he turns into the "priggish superman"
that Auden finds quite unacceptable. https://rbscp.lib.rochester.edu/3499

The man has grown up, matured, over the 30+ years of the stories.

Today's Annotated List of Lord Peter Wimsey Novels

With the help of Wikipedia, here is a list of the Wimsey novels, along with my comments:

Whose Body? (1923) This is the one i want most to read, but have somehow missed it.

Clouds of Witness (1926) One of the strongest novels, we get to see a trial in the House of Lords.

Unnatural Death (1927) (U.S. title originally The Dawson Pedigree) Like Christie's And Then There Were None, i don't care for this one because of the story. Unlike ATTWN, this is generally not recognized as one of Sayers' best Wimsey attempts.

The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club (1928) Set in the late 1920s, for the old warriors in the Bellona Club, WWI is not over. Heck, the Crimean War is not over.

Strong Poison (1930) This is Harriet's first appearance. She is almost a side character here, though His Lordship proclaims, in word and deed, that she is The One and Only Girl.

The Five Red Herrings (1931) It could be called, Whose Alibi will Hold Up? This is very much about the murder and solving it, and Harriet isn't even mentioned.

Have His Carcase (1932) While Strong Poison "lives" inside Peter's head, this one "live"s in Harriet's. The mystery may not have held up in the passage of time (a key to the solution is kinda common knowledge today), but if you like the addition of Harriet, it's essential reading.

Murder Must Advertise (1933) A peer working as coppyist in an ad agency is a novelty. You won't find Harriet here, though Sayers draws heavily on her time as copywriter to make this a strong, enjoyable mystery.

The Nine Tailors (1934) Again, no mention of Harriet, and an incredibly LONG novel, not bad as a mystery, but perhaps more interesting if you're into bell-ringing (campanology).

Gaudy Night (1935) Harriet returns to Oxford for a kind of reunion, the Gaudy of the title.

Busman's Honeymoon (1937) (last full Sayers novel) Both this novel and Gaudy Night are very talky. The pair considers what being married would mean to each of them, and particularly what, if anything, Harriet would need to give up to marry.

Thrones, Dominations (1998; unfinished Sayers manuscript completed by Jill Paton Walsh) Now married, Lord and Lady Peter continue discussing what marriage means. By way of contrast, two other couples' embodiment of marriage are presented, one of which likely was the reason Sayers lost interest in this one.

A Presumption of Death (2002; by Jill Paton Walsh) This one is set during 1939, the early days of WWII. The war's presence is unmistakable.

The Attenbury Emeralds (2010; by Jill Paton Walsh) This one spans from the early '20s to the early '50s. It is interesting to have Peter commenting on the earlier times of his life.

The Late Scholar (2014; by Jill Paton Walsh) Probably the last Lord Peter story we'll see, it continues the story of Peter and his wife (now Duke and Duchess). The ladies complained about all the foreign quotations, being batted around like tennis balls. (However, few of those quotations affect the course of the tale. You can skim them without losing anything.)

So, at this time, i'd recommend starting with one of the early strong ones, depending on your particular interests:

Clouds of Witness, with its parliamentary trial and up close & personal look at the peerage

Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, in the club of old warriors and a bigger generation gap than i've ever known

Murder Must Advertise, a biting satire of the industry

The Attenbury Emeralds might also be a good choice, if you're pretty sure you won't be put off by the talkiness, the cozy marriage, or the flashbacks taking up a third of the book.

But Gaudy Night is still my favorite.

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-60276865148612050732020-11-26T00:30:00.055-05:002020-11-26T00:30:02.681-05:00Gratitude Attitude in a Confusing Scary World
William Cowper (pronounced Cooper) left us many beautiful, sadly nearly forgotten hymns in his troubled life.

My favorite Bible study teacher, Dee Brestin, shared in her email list a link to a beautiful video of a song of his i'd never heard of.

May you find your celebration of Thanksgiving enhanced by the words and music.

Links disappeared in the text? Most recently, it's been several about Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, as well as some of Sayers' other short stories.*

This go-around, i've been more than usually impressed by the signs of the times, especially regarding:

quarantining and disease, usually influenza**, but also what one may call historical diseases like mumps.

Masking: The well-dressed person in England during WWII should not have gone out without their personal gas mask. Take a look at Wikipedia's gas mask article. There's pictures of gas masks from the entire history of gas masks, including ones for babies and for horses, and a couple in their own home wearing theirs. They're still available today, if the cloth and disposable masks aren't enough for you.

Like the gas mask in a carrier not 100% matched to her dress, Harriet and others of the time bring ration books with them. Can't eat without them! Never mind petrol and coal.

Rigid social classes: Throughout the Wimsey books, there is a marked distinction between Lord Peter's aristocracy, Harriet's educated working class background, and Bunter's adventures "below stairs." In the time period covered by Jill Paton-Walsh, these are breaking down somewhat. Reactions from the protagonists are interesting:

His Lordship, it's about time; bring on the new world

Harriet: it will be what it will be

Bunter: horrified. Despite his obvious deep friendship with his master, he is thoroughly uncomfortable socializing as equals.

Soon i hope to post an article about the Lord Peter books, touching on the highly=divided pre- and post- Harriet fandom.

______________________________________________________

*If you like the Wimsey stories, try to not miss Montague Egg. The story collections In the Teeth of Evidence and Hangman's Holiday contain between them i think all the Egg stories, as well as several Lord Peter ones and some not featuring her "flagship dectectives.". "The Milk Bottles," in In the Teeth of Evidence, is especially good.

** More on the 1918 Influenza pandemic: https://www.history.com/news/spanish-flu-second-wave-resurgence Even more fascinating is this article on the effect of climate and migration of ducks on the pandemic. https://news.agu.org/press-release/unusual-climate-conditions-influenced-wwi-mortality-and-subsequent-spanish-flu-pandemic/

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-45696019852793312522020-11-24T19:11:00.000-05:002020-11-24T19:11:27.521-05:00Holiday Art Gifts for Kids
i'm guessing you pretty well know if your kid will enjoy an art-related gift this holiday season. But you may feel lost about choosing.

First, there's those got-everything little studio cases. Like most things, the quality would vary from kit to kit. More than the quality, however, i would expect the giftee to quickly
use one medium completely up, and have most of the rest unsampled or
barely touched.

You'd probably be best off choosing your own.

What medium or media does the young artist work in? Or like to work in?

Feeling out of your depth? i do understand that! That's how i feel with tech stuff. However, you can find all sorts of people who want to help you.

Your nearby (probably chain) craft store likes to hire employees who can do just that.

Your student's art teacher could help.

Instead of general stuff to do art with, think of a project and buy parts and instructions.

While i'm not really into tech, the internet can definitely help. Most every artist out there has recommendations, and the online art and craft stores, some with local outlets, can help.

As i write this, my go-to supplier, https://www.dickblick.com/ offers gift suggestions on the homepage.

https://www.unitednow.com/ is for artists and educators, as well as family of same.

https://www.cheapjoes.com/gift-ideas.html sorts ideas by medium. Some of the Unique gifts ar the bottom of the page look fun.

If you go online, be sure to Contact the company or artist for something more specific.

Of course, colored pencils are my thing. Reviews of scholastic grade colored pencils: https://www.bestcoloredpencils.com/scholastic-grade-pencils/

Kathy Barbro does her entire website about making art with kids. She offers an art teacher's recommendations, but her ebooks would be a solid choice too for the right artist. https://artprojectsforkids.org/best-art-supplies-for-kids/

Questions? Leave a comment below and i'll see if i can help you, or point you in a good direction.

Oh, the very best art gift, or perhaps any kind of gift, is one that involves spending time with the kid. But you knew that, right?

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-64951581498285211142020-11-20T14:48:00.004-05:002020-11-20T14:48:36.082-05:00Thanksgiving Infographic from IN Dept of Health
i don't want to dwell too much on COVID here, but the fact is it is a part of our lives these days.

This link goes to an article with suggestions to make this a safe Thanksgiving, but also there's an good .infographic

https://www.in.gov/dhs/get-prepared/thanksgiving-safety/

To print the infographic separately
, right click, then choose View Image. From there, you might ask for a Print Preview. If your setup is like mine, you can then adjust the size if needed Doing this reminded me that i'd last printed in Landscape view, so i needed to change to Portrait. The infographic looked small on the page, so i adjusted the size from the drop down box, and ended up going with a custom size of 225%.

Hope this is helpful. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

On Thanksgiving, i plan to share a music video. Ok, the cutoff is over six months away, but that's not long to find and move pictures.

... it's not just photos and videos here. All those Gmail emails with

No, i've had to move greys and flesh tones to a smaller case. Since i can't find where i might have done that, here's my impressions after the latest reading:

- She writes REALLY GOOD stories.

- Maybe even as good as Christie.

- But her Poirot, while an interesting charcter, simply is not THE Hercule Poirot. i'm not sure why not; she seems to hit all the right personality notes, but still he comes off as a straw man.

- Her sidekick character, Inspector Catchpool, has some interesting psychological issues i'd like to see her develop.

- i liked Monogram Murders better the second time around. i wonder if i will be able to say the same about Closed Casket, when i get my hands on a copy again. Initially, i don't think i liked it as well, in spite of the Irish setting.

- i loved the way Hannah introduced a pair of side characters in The Mystery of the Three Quarters, whom i recognized as a couple from Christie's The Sittaford Mystery.

- Maybe i should seek that earlier essay i mentioned, under the Managing Women one, or the comparison of my favorites to Christie's own.

- Two of Hannah's have a Really Sad Murderer. They;re almost the same character, or so it seems to me now.

- Not necessarily a comment on Hannah's continuation stories, but i think Jill Paton Walsh has a better handle on her characters, Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane / Lady Peter https://us.macmillan.com/series/lordpeterwimseyharrietvane/

- Despite her Poirot seeming a ghost or straw character, i want to continue reading her Poirot stories as she writes them.

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-82654071093399427422020-10-07T14:13:00.000-04:002020-10-07T14:13:23.177-04:00Wordless Wednesday: Whatever the timeframe,
little girls are cute.

Valeriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10899094765497997431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130436972420069786.post-19928967119561284502020-10-01T21:52:00.000-04:002020-10-01T21:52:51.918-04:00Wordless Wednesday: Colorwheels Again

Back at it - this is an exercise that lets me find what my colors can do and work on smoothing the areas i'm on.

The photos are mostly in chronological order, and there are lots of free color wheel diagrams out there.
