How We See Our Elders

Max is about a year old here.   He is very intent on something; with Papaw, it's MOVING; with Grammy, he's been distracted by the camera.
In neither case is he particularly attending to the adoring people who are supporting him.
Of course, this only happens with little kids.
  Or does it?

Wordless Wednesday: The Boy with No Bear

The preschool teacher asked the kids to bring in their teddy bears.  But Boom didn't have a bear - he had "Kiki"

Boom Meets the Jack o Lantern that Grandpa carved for him

The kitty has met Boom before - and knew she was NOT happy with the addition to the family - but this was the first he noticed HER.  (Spoiler: They eventually became comfortable together.)

I made what might be my first layer cake and definitely my most decorated cake last month for my fiancee who will probably need a pseudonym here. --Boom

INKTOBER

Here's something fun you might want to try.

Inktober is a month long art challenge created by artist Jake Parker that is focused on improving skill and developing positive drawing habits. Every day for the month of October anyone participating in the Inktober challenge creates an ink drawing and posts it online. Remember to use the hashtags #inktober and #inktober2019 if you want your art to be seen by everyone.
These are ALL the Inktober rules:
1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it, on any social media account you want or just post it on your refrigerator. The point is to share your art with someone.

3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2019

4) Repeat

New to Me Resource

i LOVE hearing from you who are reading my pages.  Here's someone who added a tip for others of you out there.

In Love with a Fictional Creation?

i may be wrong about this, but it seems female fans often fall in love with Sherlock Holmes & Lord Peter Wimsey, but not with Hercule Poirot or Nero Wolfe.
Of course, Lord Peter's title and wealth are a plus, and Nero Wolfe's irascibility is a negative, but Wolfe is wealthy and Holmes is irascible, so that can't cover it.
   i think the key

Saturday Sisters: Looking at a Fictional Character

When i began this blog, and the Saturday Sisters, i never thought i would write about a totally fictitious character.  But this one is hits a place a lot of us have wondered about.

Not Quite Wordless Wednesday: A Thing of Beauty

Those of you who live in my township & drive regularly past our house (and it seems like EVERYONE in the township does that!) will have noticed the state of our roof.  The garage roof still needs to wait until we get the prep work finished, but we did have the house roof redone.
The crew declared our scheduled day "a perfect day for roofing."  Apparently they can't always fit jobs in the schedule so soon, but this was a great time, the day before the Big Rain.
And no more leaks!  It looks even better than the original roof.

Life with Max, Summer 2019: workshop and a tool

Recently we were able to get him a spot with a sheltered workshop.  Hopefully eventually he'll eventually learn how to have a job and move on to one that actually pays a living wage.  So far, i've turned in copies of his pay stubs for 3 pay periods, with a total income of less than $15.
But it has to be reported to SSI, so they can calculate whether he's making enough to refigure his funding.
If the workshop works out as well as we hope, he can at some point move to assisted housing, with bus transportation.  Maybe in a few years. . . . .

Paying for the Yoga Class

Yoga class is $5 per session. He seems to have figured out that he needs to put something in the instructor's little basket, but his concept of the value of money is still shaky.
Last week, he paid her $10 on the first class of the week.  Before the next class, i checked his wallet and found $21.  Enough for lunch with his aide after class, since he didn't owe anything for the class.
Later in the morning, i got a text from the aide telling me that he had no money and she had to stand his lunch.
  WHAT??? How did this happen?
Talking with the yoga teacher, i learned that, having that day's class already paid for, he'd put in a $20
sheesh.  At least he hadn't lost the money.

  "Punch" Card

Using our written conversation method, i determined that he absolutely wanted the price of each day's class when he takes the class.
Well, sure.  But that isn't always possible, and still wouldn't always be possible if i were more on my toes than i am.
So i made something like this on a scrap of paper.  After class, i made an X on the first box, and again after the 2nd class.  Hopefully this will help him keep track of it, but i'm not sure it deals with the core problem: Money is one of those dollar bills, and they're all worth the same.

Bic Conte Coloring Pencils: Two Weeks Later

The photo on the computer screen is from a couple of weeks ago, showing how long my colored pencils are.  i said the discrepancy would only get worse, as i have my color preferences.

These pencils are everything the website says: smooth, break resistant, bright colors, shade very nicely.  i will enjoy this package as long as it lasts, but, without openstock pencils, i can't consider making them a regular choice.
  https://www.conte-coloring.com/en-us/

These were my regular "workhorse" colored pencils in September 2016.

This year, i'm adding a few Prismacolors back, though they are totally unsatisfactory in every way except the unique colors.
Most of the case is filled with Faber Castell Polychromos, with a good sprinkling of Caran d'Ache Pablos and Luminance, a handful of Lyra Polycolors, and even a few of Derwent's new Procolour pencils.

Wordless Wednesday: Why i insist on pencils that are available in open stock

Perfectly lovely pencils, but if i want more, i will have to find another set. The discrepancy in length will only get greater as i use them more.

Quiz, anyone?

i was looking for the lyrics of a '70s song - seems lots of people have recorded it, but the version i wanted was the first recording, by its writer - and this came up.  Fascinating!

Diploma or Certificate?: Indiana Diploma Decisions

Last week i received a newsletter from IN*Source with a document link that i wanted to share with ya'll.
When we made the decision for Max, i don't think we had enough information. You surely won't be able to say that after be able to say that after reading this pdf.
You wouldn't believe how hard it was to track it down without using a l
This is the best i could do.  Most of the links i found take six lines of blog space! This one still isn't even a link to the actual document, however, if you prefer to learn in a video, there's some of those, as well as other resources.
The one i'm specifically sharing is called Indiana Diploma Decisions.

To get there from here, read the intro paragraph, then click the box in the (horizontal) center of the page.  The one
The page below is a search result.  You should be able to get to the same pdf at the bottom of the page. It's the tall skinny one that says Indiana Diploma Decisions. But everything on the page is worth looking at, if that's where you are.

Wordless Wednesday: Iris and Whirligigs

The dark iris are new this year.  Right now they're between blossomings. And i don't remember the whirlagigs being so common in all the time we've been here.

Navigating this Site: How i've set it up

Occasionally i get questions about how to do this or that: email me, subscribe, whatever.
Periodically i'll change some of the formatting.  Here is the setup as of tonight; i don't expect to remove anything, though i do occasionally move stuff.
And this post is really LONG.  But i've put the most requested parts toward the top, easier for you to find..
Really, everything you're looking for should be here.  If you're

turning into a lit major?

This was kinda hard for me when i was in school, but i can't not think this way now. . .

Nearly Wordless Wednesday: Don't Pour Hot Spaghetti Water on Your Foot!

i thought this was an ugly foot! But it's relatively pleasant looking here, not to mention not HURTING!
You may not want to continue.  There are photos of my burned foot, not pretty!

Scam Alert

This week i have received FIVE calls from the same North Carolina phone number.
The first time, i checked the voicemail the caller left: a very trustworthy-sounding male voice told me that my Social Security number has been suspended for suspected fraud activity.
Yeah, right. That's not how they'd contact me.

Reading History

In our Village of Merici Westside Book Club, we're reading Stevenson's Kidnapped.
It's a rollicking good story, but, between the Scots words peppered throughout the story and the complex political background, i'm not sure our members are picking up on enough.
No doubt i think they need more than they do.
Anyway.  Turns out i actually wanted my OTHER blue text, about the History of England. But of course i had to explore the US history book before replacing it on the shelf.
And i found this quote by a guy i'd never heard of, but should have:
