A Way of Looking at Different Abilities and Disabilities

based on a quote from Dr. Sally Shaywitz of The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity
This is about a set of films and a particular disability, but it's also about overcoming challenges  in general.

The Heartland Film Festival is in town for a few more days.
i had never been, but, Boom being a film graduate, he's been volunteering.  One of the perks is passes, and he offered to share with me today.
i am so glad and i heartily recommend the festival and the films we saw.

We saw the bundle of shorts and short feature, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia. The last showing of this bundle will be Saturday afternoon, if you can make it, and well worth your time.

The shorts were well bundled.  i'd like the Cliffnotes version of Stand Tall; Blank Canvas briefly shares of one woman's response to hair loss from radiation treatment; Caine's Arcade is a tribute to a boy's amazing imagination & ingenuity; Ailema lets us enter the world of a young girl with dyslexia.

The main film is The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.

Rather than attempt to tell you anything about the film, i will share some quotes from real people in the documentary.
Charles R. Schwab, dyslexic  When you get out into the real world, it's thinking that's valued, not learning.

David Boies, dyslexic  Life is not a timed examination. . . . What matters is how well you're able to do (the job).

Dr. Sally Shaywitz, professional working with dyslexics  "an island of weakness surrounded by an island of strengths"

A parent in the film reminded us that how you perform in 4th gr is only a small slice of your life.
A new college student, a young man with dyslexia, advises us to persevere and  own our circumstances.  We have to work within to work through them.
