Summer Day Communicating

As we left our volunteer session at Gleaners today, Max began inserting the word, "Police," into his usual round to Thomas word "conversation."
This was alarming.  What had i missed?

The Process

i asked him," Is this a police in one of your stories, or one in real life?"
  He replied, "Real life."
Now when could he have met a policeman recently?  i couldn't come up with any ideas, nor any way to break further in the conversation.
The word continued to come up as we made our rounds.

The Answer

After the laundramat, we pulled up beside a police car at a stoplight, and it occurred to me that we'd seen an unusual number of those cars today.
  He said, "Police," again.
i asked, "Do you mean a police in one of your stories, a police who came to our door, or one of the  police cars like the one we just passed?"
He replied, "Like the one we just passed."
  Relief to mom.

i wish i could convey the sing-song, higher intonation at the beginning of the sentence he uses.  Definitely not typical, but charming in its way.
